Common training mistakes that limit performance
Progress can be affected by poor structure, inconsistent training, inadequate recovery, and unrealistic expectations.
Strength training and bodybuilding are often used as if they mean the same thing. They share exercises and equipment, but their primary goals, and therefore their programming, are not always the same.
Strength training is organised around producing force. Progress is measured mainly by how much load can be handled with acceptable technique across key movement patterns such as squatting, hinging, pressing and pulling.
Bodybuilding is organised around muscular development and physique. Progress is measured mainly by muscle size, proportion and symmetry, which changes how exercises are selected and how sessions are structured.
Strength work usually favours heavier loads, lower repetitions, longer rest periods and a smaller number of practised movements. Technical consistency is treated as part of the training itself.
Bodybuilding usually favours moderate loads, higher repetition ranges, shorter rest, more exercise variation and more isolation work, with attention to training each muscle group through a full range of motion.
In practice, the two approaches support each other. Larger muscle can contribute to force production, and stronger movement patterns allow heavier and more productive muscle-building work.
Most people training for general health, sport or appearance benefit from a blended plan: a foundation of well-executed compound strength work, supported by targeted volume for weaker or under-developed areas. The right balance depends on the individual goal, training age and available recovery.
